You don’t need a crisis or a clearly defined problem to reach out. You might be feeling overwhelmed, struggling in a relationship or simply wanting to understand yourself better. Your first conversation can help you decide whether counselling feels right for you.
Your first session is time to get acquainted, ask questions and talk about what brought you here. You can share as much as feels comfortable. Together, you and your counsellor can discuss your concerns and what you would like support with.
You don’t need to rehearse what to say or arrive with everything figured out. If it helps, note a few concerns or questions beforehand. Let us know when booking if there is anything you would like clarified before your appointment.
The Thrive Minds is led by Mrs. Vijaya Ambati, a counselling psychologist with postgraduate training in counselling psychology and family and marital counselling. Her areas of support include individuals, couples, families, students and young adults. You can ask about her background before booking.
It’s understandable to feel unsure about speaking to someone new. You can start with a small concern, ask questions or say that you’re finding it difficult. You don’t have to share your whole story in the first session or find the perfect words.
Privacy is an important part of feeling comfortable in counselling. Before sharing sensitive information, ask your counsellor to explain confidentiality, its limits and how session records are handled. For couples, families or young people, clarify what may be shared and with whom.
There is no single number that fits everyone. The concerns you bring, your goals and what feels helpful will shape the conversation about further sessions. You can discuss progress, frequency and whether to continue with your counsellor as you go.
Please contact us for the current session fee and duration before booking. These details should be clear before you confirm an appointment. If you’re enquiring for a couple, family member or student, mention this so we can explain the relevant arrangements.
You can talk about stress, anxiety, emotional difficulties, relationships, family concerns, parenting, student pressures or changes in your life. Personal growth, behavioural and social concerns are also welcome. If you’re unsure where your concern fits, describe it in your own words when enquiring.
